The City of Ranson operates under a mayor-manager form of government. The Mayor and six Council Members are elected to 4-year terms. The Mayor serves as a member and the presiding officer of the Council; and a City Manager shall be appointed by the Council. The Council and Mayor shall be the governing body. The City Manager shall be the administrative authority, manage the affairs of the City under the supervision of the Council and shall be responsible to the Council. The City Manager shall appoint or employ, in accordance with Chapter 8 of the West Virginia Code and this Charter, all subordinates and employees for whose duties or work the City Manager is responsible to Council. The Chief of Police is an appointee of the Mayor.
