Be Alert for Emails Impersonating the City of Ranson

The City of Ranson has recently become aware of a phishing scam in which a business received an email from someone impersonating the City and requesting a significant payment. If you receive an unexpected email that appears to come from the City of Ranson, particularly one requesting payment, please take a moment to verify the message before clicking on any links or making a payment.

Check the Email Address

The City of Ranson currently uses both @ransonwv.us and @ransonwv.gov email addresses. The City is transitioning to .gov email addresses, but many legitimate City communications are still being sent from @ransonwv.us addresses.

Be Cautious of Unusual Payment Requests

The City uses established payment processes for City fees and taxes. Be especially cautious of requests for unconventional payment methods, such as wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other unexpected payment methods.

  1. Building Permit Fees:Building permit fees are processed through MGO. Payments can be made online through MGO, by phone, or in person at City Hall on the first floor.
  2. B&O Taxes:B&O tax notices are sent quarterly. Online payment information is included in the notices and is also available through the City’s website. Payments can also be made in person on the first floor of City Hall.
  3. Business Licenses: Business license fee notices are sent annually. Online payment information is included in the notices and is also available through the City’s website. Payments can also be made in person on the first floor of City Hall.

Do Not Click Suspicious Links

If an email seems unusual or unexpected, do not click links or open attachments until you have verified that the message is legitimate. Instead, go directly to the City’s website or contact the City using information you already know to be legitimate.

When in Doubt, Verify

If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from the City of Ranson, verify the request before making any payment. Use a phone number or email address you already know and have used to correspond with the City rather than relying on contact information provided in a suspicious email.
